Bongs: Scientific Glass, Beakers, Straight Tubes, Heady & Mini Water Pipes

A bong is a water pipe: smoke from the bowl travels down a downstem into a water chamber, bubbles through the water to cool and filter, and fills the tube before you inhale. Angies Boutique carries bongs from scientific glass makers ROOR, Illadelph, HiSi, Sheldon Black, Moltn and AFM; everyday pieces from GRAV, Cookies, MJ Arsenal and Human Grade; novelty bongs from Hemper and BigFun!; silicone bongs from Eyce; and handmade heady work from artists like Ben Wilson, Pakoh and Coyle Condenser. For every type of water piece in one place, including bubblers, recyclers and gravity bongs, see Water Pipes & Bongs.

      • Shapes: beaker, straight tube, percolator, recycler, gravity, mini, silicone, novelty, heady
      • Scientific brands: ROOR, Illadelph, HiSi, Sheldon Black, Moltn, AFM
      • Everyday brands: GRAV, Cookies, MJ Arsenal, Human Grade, Leisure Glass, MAV
      • Novelty and silicone: Hemper, BigFun!, Eyce

      • Joints: most take a 14mm bowl; larger scientific tubes often use 18mm

      How does a bong work?

A bong has four parts: the bowl, which holds the flower; the downstem, which carries smoke below the water line; the water chamber, where smoke bubbles through water; and the tube or neck, which fills with cooled smoke. On most modern bongs the bowl is a removable slide: you pull it out at the end of the hit to clear the chamber. Water cools the smoke and catches ash and some particles, so a bong hits smoother than a dry pipe of the same size.

Percolators, or percs, are extra diffusion stages inside the tube. They split smoke into more, smaller bubbles for more cooling, at the cost of a little more drag and more cleaning. Ice pinches, the small glass notches in the neck, hold ice cubes above the water for an even colder hit.

The best value under heady prices A Human Grade beaker or straight tube
The smoothest hit A percolator bong such as the HiSi Double Bell Perc

Functional art A heady piece from Heady Glass

What do the numbers like 50x5mm mean?

Scientific makers list tube size as diameter by wall thickness. A 50x5mm tube is 50 millimeters across with 5mm thick glass. Thicker walls, like 7mm and 9mm, are heavier and more resistant to knocks; wider tubes hold more smoke. Height is listed in inches. Most bongs use a 14mm joint for the bowl, while many large scientific tubes use 18mm, so check the joint size before buying an extra bowl, ash catcher or downstem.

How do I use and clean a bong?

      1. Fill the chamber until the water covers the slits at the bottom of the downstem by about an inch.
      2. Pack the bowl, light it while inhaling gently, and watch the chamber fill.
      3. Pull the bowl out to clear the chamber and finish the hit.
      4. Change the water daily; old water dulls flavor.
      5. To clean, empty the water, add 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, plug the openings and shake, then rinse with warm water, never boiling. Cleaners like Formula 420 make it faster.

An ash catcher keeps the main chamber cleaner between washes. Supplies are in Cleaning Supplies.

What else should I look at?

Upgrade or replace parts with Bowls & Slides, Downstems and Ash Catchers. Shop by maker in Illadelph, HiSi, AFM, GRAV, Cookies, MJ Arsenal and MAV. For concentrates, see Dab Rigs.

What should I know before buying a bong?

Check the joint: 14mm and 18mm bowls, downstems and ash catchers are not interchangeable without an adapter, and the angle (45° or 90°) must match too. Bigger is not always better: tall tubes need bigger pulls, so a mid-size beaker is easier for most people. More percs, more cleaning: percolators smooth the hit but trap more residue. Heady pieces are one-offs: the piece pictured is the piece you get. Glass breaks: keep it on a stable surface and away from table edges. Sold to adults 21+.

      Frequently Asked Questions about Bongs

A bong is a water pipe. Smoke from the bowl travels down a downstem into a water chamber, bubbles through the water to cool and filter, and fills the tube before you inhale. On most modern bongs the bowl is a removable slide you pull out to clear the chamber. Water makes the hit smoother than a dry pipe of the same size.
A beaker has a wide, cone-shaped base that holds more water and is harder to knock over, so it is the most popular first bong. A straight tube is a straight cylinder that holds less water, so smoke clears faster and the hit feels punchier. Both come in the same heights and glass thicknesses.
A percolator is an extra diffusion stage inside the tube that splits smoke into more, smaller bubbles for more cooling. Percs make the hit smoother but add a little drag and more cleaning. If you want the smoothest possible hit, choose a percolator bong such as a HiSi Double Bell Perc; if you want simple and easy to clean, a plain beaker or straight tube is enough.
It is the tube size: 50 millimeters in diameter with 5 millimeter thick walls. Scientific glass makers like ROOR, Illadelph, HiSi and Sheldon Black list sizes this way. Thicker walls such as 7mm and 9mm are heavier and more resistant to knocks, and wider tubes hold more smoke.
Most bongs use a 14mm joint, while many large scientific tubes use 18mm. Bowls, downstems and ash catchers must match the joint size, the gender and the angle of your bong. If you are not sure, call Angies Boutique at (213) 680-0080 or send a photo of the joint.
A mid-size beaker, around 12 to 18 inches, is the easiest first bong: the wide base resists tipping and the hit is easy to manage. The Angies Boutique 18 inch Clear Beaker and Human Grade beakers are solid starting points, and a GRAV Mini Beaker works if you want something small.
Fill the chamber until the water covers the slits at the bottom of the downstem by about an inch. Too little water skips the filtration, and too much makes the bong hard to pull and can splash. Change the water daily for the best flavor.
Empty the water, add 91 percent or higher isopropyl alcohol and a spoon of coarse salt, plug the openings and shake. For heavy buildup, let it soak, then shake again and rinse with warm water, never boiling. Cleaners like Formula 420 make it faster. An ash catcher keeps the main chamber cleaner between washes. Use a gentle cleaner on fumed or heady glass.
