Downstems from Mobius Glass, HiSi, Illadelph, Ace-Labz, Grav, and RJ Glass — the diffuser tube that connects the bowl to the water chamber of a bong. Available in 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm joint sizes and a full range of lengths from 3.0" through 6.0". Replacement downstems, upgrade diffusers, and adjustable models, stocked at Angies Boutique, 838 N Broadway in Los Angeles.

      • Sized replacement downstems (HiSi 3.0" through 6.0" in half-inch steps)
      • Diffused upgrade downstems (Mobius Glass slitted diffusers)
      • Brand-specific downstems (Illadelph OG, Turbo, Micro v2, Mini OG — Mini-Delph fit)
      • Adjustable downstems (Grav Adjustable Downstem)
      • Downstem and bowl sets (Illadelph x Harold Ludeman)
      • Carried at Angies Boutique since 1990

A downstem is the angled glass tube that runs from the bong's joint down into the water. Smoke enters through the bowl, travels down the downstem, and exits below the waterline — where the diffuser slits break the smoke into small bubbles for cooling and filtration. A cracked or mismatched downstem ruins a bong; the right replacement restores it. An upgraded diffuser downstem improves an otherwise basic bong.

Fit is everything with a downstem. Four specs must match: joint size (10mm, 14mm, 18mm) where the downstem meets the bong; joint gender (the downstem is usually male into a female bong joint); length, measured from the bottom of the ground-glass joint to the tip — too long and it hits the bottom of the bong, too short and the diffuser sits above the water; and joint angle (45° or 90°). The HiSi line at Angies Boutique solves the length question directly — HiSi downstems are stocked in 3.0", 3.5", 4.0", 4.5", 5.0", 5.5", and 6.0" so the exact length is always available. The Grav Adjustable Downstem solves it a different way, telescoping to fit a range of bongs.

Downstems pair with the bowl that sits on top and the bong they drop into. Compare against Bowls & Slides for the bowl, Bongs for the main piece, and Ash Catchers for an alternative way to add diffusion and pre-filtration.

      Ideal For

      • Bong owners replacing a cracked or chipped downstem
      • Smokers upgrading a basic bong with a better diffuser
      • Illadelph Mini-Delph owners needing a brand-specific Micro v2 or Mini OG downstem
      • Buyers who know their exact length requirement — HiSi covers 3.0" to 6.0"
      • Anyone who wants one downstem to fit multiple bongs — the Grav Adjustable

      Not the Right Fit If

      • You need the bowl that sits on top — see Bowls & Slides
      • You want pre-filtration without replacing the downstem — see Ash Catchers
      • You have a fixed-downstem bong — the downstem is fused and not replaceable

The downstem collection sorts by purpose. Sized replacement downstems: the HiSi line in 3.0", 3.5", 4.0", 4.5", 5.0", 5.5", and 6.0" lengths — measure the old downstem and match the size exactly. Diffused upgrade downstems: Mobius Glass slitted diffusers that improve bubble-breaking over a basic downstem. Brand-specific downstems: Illadelph OG (precision 3-slit diffuser), Illadelph Turbo and Frosted Turbo, Illadelph Micro v2 and Mini OG for the Mini-Delph platform, and the Illadelph Encalmo OG. Adjustable: the Grav Adjustable Downstem telescopes to fit a range of bong depths. Sets: the Illadelph x Harold Ludeman Downstem & Bowl Set pairs a matched downstem and bowl. Specialty: Ace-Labz unbreakable-style downstems and RJ Glass.

Three picks cover the most common needs. The HiSi 4.5" Downstem is the standard-replacement benchmark — measure the old downstem, pick the matching HiSi length, done. The Grav Adjustable Downstem is the universal-fit pick — it telescopes to fit a range of bong depths, useful when the exact length is unknown or for use across multiple bongs. The Illadelph OG Downstem is the upgrade pick — a precision 3-slit diffuser from one of the most respected scientific-glass brands.

      Situation Recommended Pick Why
Replacing a broken downstem, length known HiSi sized downstem (3.0"–6.0") Exact length match in half-inch steps
Length unknown or multiple bongs Grav Adjustable Downstem Telescopes to fit a range of depths
Upgrading diffusion on a basic bong Illadelph OG or Mobius slitted Precision diffuser slits break smoke finer
Illadelph Mini-Delph owner Illadelph Micro v2 or Mini OG Brand-specific fit for the Mini-Delph platform
Want a matched downstem + bowl Illadelph x Harold Ludeman Set Pre-matched downstem and bowl

A downstem must match four specs to fit: joint size, joint gender, length, and angle. Measure the old downstem from the bottom of the ground-glass joint to the tip before ordering. Fixed-downstem bongs have the downstem fused into the body — these cannot take a replacement. Glass downstems are fragile at the diffuser slits; the Grav Adjustable and Ace-Labz options trade some diffusion for durability. Brand-specific downstems (Illadelph Mini-Delph fit) only work with their matching pieces. See Cleaning Supplies for keeping diffuser slits clear.

Start with the HiSi 4.5" Downstem as the standard-replacement pick, read the iso-cleaning guide for keeping diffuser slits clear, and check Bowls & Slides for the matching bowl.

      Frequently Asked Questions about Downstems

Measure the old downstem from the bottom of the ground-glass joint (the frosted section that seats into the bong) to the very tip of the diffuser. That length, plus the joint size (10mm, 14mm, or 18mm) and joint angle (45° or 90°), tells you exactly which downstem to order. HiSi downstems are stocked in half-inch steps from 3.0" to 6.0" so an exact match is almost always available.
Too long, and the downstem tip hits the bottom of the bong, preventing the joint from seating and risking a crack. Too short, and the diffuser slits sit above the waterline, so smoke is not filtered through water at all. The downstem length has to place the diffuser slits below the water but clear of the bong floor. When unsure, the Grav Adjustable Downstem telescopes to fit a range of depths.
No — four specs must match: joint size (10mm, 14mm, 18mm), joint gender (usually male downstem into a female bong joint), length, and joint angle (45° or 90°). Brand-specific downstems like the Illadelph Micro v2 and Mini OG only fit their matching Mini-Delph pieces. Fixed-downstem bongs have the downstem fused into the body and cannot take a replacement at all.
Yes. The diffuser slits at the bottom of the downstem break smoke into bubbles — more slits and finer slits create smaller bubbles, which means more surface area contacting the water, which means cooler and smoother smoke. Upgrading a basic single-slit downstem to a precision multi-slit diffuser like the Illadelph OG or a Mobius slitted downstem is a noticeable improvement on an otherwise basic bong.
An adjustable downstem, like the Grav Adjustable Downstem, telescopes — it extends and retracts to fit a range of bong depths instead of being a single fixed length. It is the right choice when the exact length needed is unknown, or when one downstem needs to work across multiple bongs. The tradeoff is a slightly less refined diffuser compared to a fixed precision downstem.
A glass downstem does not wear out the way a coil or atomizer does — it is replaced when it cracks, when the diffuser slits clog beyond what cleaning recovers, or when you upgrade to a better-diffusing design. Daily users at Angies Boutique typically replace a downstem every 12 to 24 months for performance, and immediately if there is any chip on the joint or visible crack in the body. Soak the downstem in Formula 420 Glass Cleaner once a week to keep the diffuser slits clear; if resin has hardened inside the slits to the point that bubbles no longer pull evenly, replace it because no amount of soaking restores slit precision once carbon bonds permanently. We stock 14mm and 18mm downstems in standard lengths from 3 inches through 6 inches, plus the Grav Adjustable Downstem for bongs that fall between sizes. Cheap downstems are fine as replacements, but a quality diffuser dramatically smooths the hit and a multi-slit or tree diffuser is a meaningful upgrade over a single-slit basic stem.
Slit and tree describe how the downstem breaks smoke into bubbles at the water line. A slit diffuser is the standard format — vertical or angled slits cut into the bottom of the downstem stem that release smoke as fine bubbles as they pass through the water. More slits, finer slits, and slits cut on multiple planes produce smoother hits and quieter pulls. A tree diffuser is a more elaborate format with multiple arms branching off the central stem, each arm with its own slit pattern, multiplying the diffusion many times over. Tree downstems pull smoother and quieter than slit downstems but are more fragile and harder to clean because the arms are thinner and the slits collect more residue. Most bongs sold today ship with a slit diffuser, and replacement slit diffusers from our downstems collection are the simplest like-for-like swap. Choose a tree diffuser if your bong's chamber is large enough to accept the arms without crowding the water level and you prioritize maximum smoothness over ease of cleaning.
Angies Boutique at 838 N Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles has carried glass downstems continuously since the shop opened in 1990, and our wall stocks 14mm and 18mm slit, tree, and showerhead diffusers in 3 inch through 6 inch lengths plus the Grav Adjustable Downstem for bongs that fall between standard sizes. Bring your bong to the counter — our staff measures the joint to mouthpiece distance with a calibrated tape, confirms joint size and gender, and matches a downstem that seats correctly without bottoming out on the bong floor or sitting too high above the water line. This in-person fit check is the most reliable way to avoid the most common downstem buying mistake: ordering by guess and ending up with a part that hits the bong floor or sits above the water line, neither of which functions correctly. If you cannot visit the store, our product pages list exact length and joint specs, and our team answers fit questions by email or phone seven days a week with same-day response.
No. A downstem is the smoke channel that carries airflow from the bowl down through the water — it has no function on its own without a bowl seated on top to hold and light the flower. The bowl seats into the top of the downstem and holds the flower; the downstem carries the smoke from the bowl into the bong's water chamber where it bubbles through the slits and cools. If you ordered only a downstem and not a bowl, see the glass-bowls-slides collection for a matching slide in the right size and gender. Joint size and gender of the bowl must match the top of the downstem — if your bong takes a 14mm male downstem, the bowl will be 14mm female to fit on top of it, and vice versa. The slits on a downstem need to sit just below the water line for proper diffusion, so the bowl pull also depends on getting the downstem length right relative to your bong's depth.
Ground-glass joints stick when residue dries between the frosted surfaces or when the joint is over-seated through repeated downward pressure during use. To free a stuck downstem, first try gentle warming — set the bong in a sink and pour warm (not boiling) water over the joint area for a minute or two to expand the outer glass slightly and break the seal. Do not pull straight up with force at any point; use a gentle side-to-side rocking motion while applying light upward pressure on the downstem stem itself, not on the diffuser slits. For chronic sticking, soak the joint in Formula 420 for 20 minutes to dissolve the resin ring between the frosted surfaces. Going forward, a small amount of joint grease on the frosted surface prevents future sticking without affecting smoke flavor. If the downstem will not free after warming and soaking, stop pulling — forcing it risks snapping the bong's joint. Bring the bong to our LA counter at 838 N Broadway and we will free it for free.
