Bong Downstems: Replacement & Diffuser Downstems

A downstem is the glass tube that carries smoke from the bowl down below the waterline of your bong. The tip is cut with slits or holes that break smoke into small bubbles to cool and filter it. A cracked or wrong-length downstem makes a bong pull poorly, and a diffuser downstem is one of the easiest ways to make any bong smoother.

How to measure for a replacement downstem

Remove the old downstem if you have it and measure from the widest point of the joint to the tip.
No old downstem? Measure from the outside of your bong's joint to a spot about half an inch above the bottom of the base, on the angle the downstem will sit.
Check the joints: many downstems are 18mm male on the bong end and 14mm female on the bowl end, but some bongs use 14mm or 10mm. Match both ends.
Pick the closest length. Too short and the tip will not sit in the water; too long and it will hit the bottom.

HiSi and GRAV downstems

Caring for your downstem

Clean the downstem every time you change the water; resin builds up fastest in the slits.
Soak in isopropyl alcohol with fine salt and use a pipe cleaner through the tube.
