Bubblers: Hammer, Sherlock, Blunt & Mini Dab Bubblers

A bubbler is a hand pipe with a built-in water chamber: small enough to hold in one hand, with water filtration that cools and smooths the hit like a small bong. Angies Boutique carries everyday glass and silicone bubblers from GRAV, MJ Arsenal, AFM, NWTN, Wulf Mods, Cookies and Eyce, mini dab bubblers for concentrates, and handmade heady bubblers from glassblowers like Andy Roth, Chadd Lacy, Matt Robertson, RJ Glass, Sakibomb, Reyna and Pakoh.

      • What it is: a hand-held water pipe, between a dry hand pipe and a full-size bong
      • Styles: hammer, sherlock, pocket, blunt bubblers, mini dab bubblers, silicone, heady art
      • For: flower (with a bowl) or concentrates (with a banger)
      • Everyday brands: GRAV, MJ Arsenal, AFM, NWTN Home, Wulf Mods, Cookies, Eyce
      • Heady artists: Andy Roth, Chadd Lacy, Matt Robertson, RJ Glass, Sakibomb, Reyna, Pakoh, HOOBS and more
      • Best for: solo sessions, smoother hits than a dry pipe, and a smaller footprint than a bong

What is a bubbler, and how is it different from a bong or pipe?

A dry hand pipe pulls smoke straight from the bowl to your mouth, so it is hot and harsh. A bong runs smoke through a large water chamber with a removable bowl and downstem, which is smooth but big. A bubbler sits in the middle: the water chamber is built into a pipe you can hold in one hand, so you get water-cooled hits in a piece that fits on a nightstand or in a bag.

Most bubblers have a fixed bowl and a carb hole you cover while you pull and release to clear. Some larger and scientific bubblers use a removable bowl and a 10mm or 14mm joint, which means you can swap in a quartz banger and use them for concentrates.

What types of bubblers are there?

      Sherlock bubblers

A sherlock bubbler has a long, curved neck that drops below the bowl, like a Sherlock Holmes pipe. The curve lengthens the smoke path and gives a relaxed, laid-back draw. See Sherlock Bubblers.

      Pocket and mini bubblers

Pocket bubblers are the smallest water pipes made, built for one person and easy to stash. GRAV makes the widest pocket line: the Hourglass, Slush Cup, Coffee Mug and Wedge. The Wulf Mods Beek is a compact everyday piece, and MJ Arsenal's glow-in-the-dark Frankenbubbler brings the fun.

      Blunt and joint bubblers

A blunt bubbler is a small water chamber with an opening that holds a lit joint or blunt, so you get water filtration without packing a bowl. The MJ Arsenal x Tyson 2.0 Punch-Out is the standout. See Blunt Bubblers.

      Mini dab bubblers

Mini rigs are bubblers built for concentrates, with a joint that takes a quartz banger instead of a bowl. MJ Arsenal's Hydra and Mini Jig and the Wulf Mods Atom, which ships with a banger, are the compact picks. More in Dab Rigs.

      Heady and artist bubblers

Angies Boutique carries one-of-one bubblers from working glassblowers: faceted tubes from Andy Roth, Chadd Lacy's whale pieces, Matt Robertson's Zoo Tubes, RJ Glass, the Sakibomb x Ryan Fitt Lucky Cat Matryoshka, Reyna's coconut bubblers, Pakoh and the HOOBS Piranha Plant. Each is a single piece; when it sells, it is gone. Browse more in Heady Glass.

How do I use a bubbler?

      1. Add water through the mouthpiece until it just covers the bottom of the stem inside the chamber. Too little water skips the filtration; too much splashes up into your mouth.
      2. Pack the bowl with ground flower, or heat the banger if you are using a dab bubbler.
      3. Cover the carb hole, light the bowl and pull gently so the water bubbles.
      4. Release the carb and finish the pull to clear the chamber.
      5. Change the water after every session or two; old water dulls flavor and grows residue.

How do I clean a bubbler?

Pour out the water, add 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol and a spoon of coarse salt, cover the openings and shake. For heavy buildup, let it soak, then shake again and rinse with warm water, never boiling. Cleaners like Formula 420 work the same way with less effort. Silicone bubblers come apart for cleaning; check the maker's directions before using a dishwasher. Use a gentle cleaner on fumed, color-changing or heady glass. Everything you need is in Cleaning Supplies.

What else should I look at?

For bigger water pipes, see Bongs and Recycler Bongs. For dry pipes, see Glass Pipes, Sherlocks and Spoons. Shop the makers directly in GRAV, MJ Arsenal and AFM Glass, and find more handmade work in Local Glass Artists.

What should I know before buying a bubbler?

Fixed or removable bowl: most hand bubblers have a fixed bowl; pieces with a 10mm or 14mm joint take removable bowls and bangers, so check the joint size if you want to dab. Size matters for cleaning: small chambers get dirty faster, so change the water often. Glass is glass: borosilicate is strong, but a drop on concrete breaks it; choose silicone for travel. Heady pieces are one-offs and vary piece to piece, so the item pictured is the item you get. Sold to adults 21+.

      Frequently Asked Questions about Bubblers

A bubbler is a hand pipe with a built-in water chamber. It is small enough to hold in one hand, and the water cools and smooths the smoke like a small bong. Bubblers sit between a dry hand pipe and a full-size bong, and they come in glass and silicone for flower or, with a banger, for concentrates.
A bong is a larger water pipe that sits on a table, with a removable bowl and downstem and more water for cooling. A bubbler is hand-held, usually has a fixed bowl, and uses a smaller water chamber. Bongs give bigger, cooler hits; bubblers are more compact, easier to store and better for solo sessions.
A hammer bubbler has a flat-bottomed chamber with the mouthpiece off the side, so it looks like a hammer and sits flat. A sherlock bubbler has a long curved neck that drops below the bowl, like a Sherlock Holmes pipe. A blunt bubbler holds a lit joint or blunt in an opening so the smoke runs through water without packing a bowl.
Yes, with the right piece. Mini dab bubblers such as the MJ Arsenal Hydra and Mini Jig and the Wulf Mods Atom use a joint that takes a quartz banger instead of a bowl. A standard hand bubbler with a fixed bowl is for flower only. If a bubbler has a 10mm or 14mm joint, it can take a banger.
Add water through the mouthpiece until it just covers the bottom of the stem inside the chamber. Too little water skips the filtration, and too much splashes up into your mouth when you pull. Change the water after every session or two to keep the flavor clean.
Pour out the water, add 91 percent or higher isopropyl alcohol and a spoon of coarse salt, cover the openings and shake. For heavy buildup, let it soak, then shake again and rinse with warm water, never boiling. Glass cleaners like Formula 420 work the same way with less effort. Use a gentle cleaner on fumed, color-changing or heady glass.
A silicone bubbler, like the Eyce Hammer Silicone Bubbler, survives drops that would break glass and comes apart for cleaning. For glass, a pocket bubbler such as the GRAV Hourglass or Slush Cup is small enough to pack safely. Empty the water before you travel.
Heady bubblers are handmade, one-of-one pieces from working glassblowers, so you are buying functional art. Angies Boutique carries heady bubblers from artists like Andy Roth, Chadd Lacy, Matt Robertson, RJ Glass, Sakibomb, Reyna and Pakoh. Each piece is unique and is gone once it sells. For daily use on a budget, a GRAV or MJ Arsenal bubbler gives the same water filtration.
