A glass pipe, also called a hand pipe or spoon, is the simplest way to smoke flower: a borosilicate glass bowl connected to a mouthpiece, with a carb hole on the side to control airflow. There is no water, so a glass pipe is small, fast to use and easy to carry. Pack ground flower into the bowl, cover the carb hole with a finger, light the bowl while you inhale, then uncover the carb to pull the remaining smoke out of the chamber. The carb hole is what makes a hand pipe work like a small bong: covering it builds the hit, and releasing it clears it. Pipes without a carb, like many sherlocks and one-hitters, are cleared by inhaling a little longer.
Glass pipes are made from borosilicate, the same heat-resistant glass used in labs. Thicker glass is heavier and more durable; thinner glass is lighter and cheaper. Because there is no water, the hit is warmer than a bubbler or bong, and the flavor of the flower comes through clearly.
The spoon is the classic glass pipe: a round bowl on one end, a straight mouthpiece on the other, and a carb on the side. Drop the pipe in a zip bag or jar with 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol and a spoon of coarse salt, shake for a minute, let it soak if the resin is heavy, then rinse with warm water, never boiling. Cleaners like Formula 420 do the same job faster. Use a gentle cleaner on sculpted, fumed or color-changing glass, and clean often: a quick soak every few sessions is much easier than scraping old resin. Sculpted pipes are fragile in different places: raised details on Empire and novelty pipes can chip if dropped, so store them in a soft case.
