The Verdict

Think about how your last bong died. It probably wasn't a dramatic fall — it was a knock against the tap while you were rinsing it, or a slide off the edge of a table onto a rim that chipped. Bongs almost always fail at the mouthpiece rim and the base edge, because those are the two points that contact hard surfaces.

Softglass moulded thick, ribbed silicone onto exactly those two points. That's the whole idea, and it's a better one than it sounds — this isn't a silicone bong pretending to be glass, and it isn't glass with a decorative rubber band. The airpath is 100% borosilicate. The silicone is structural, and it sits only where the damage happens.

The rest of the design earns its keep too. The neck band is magnetic and holds a standard lighter, so the one thing you always lose is attached to the one thing you never lose. Compatibility

The body takes a 14mm female joint, and the included 4" downstem drops straight in. Because the downstem is removable and standard-sized, you are not locked to Softglass parts:

• Bowls — any 14mm male flower bowl will fit the downstem.
• Downstems — a standard 14mm downstem of matching length will fit the body. Browse downstems.
• Ash catchers — a 14mm male ash catcher will seat in the body joint, though on a 9" piece it will raise the centre of gravity noticeably.

Not compatible with dabbing. Softglass states that their products are not for use with torch-style lighters. A banger would fit the joint mechanically, but the torch flame required to heat it is exactly what the manufacturer warns against near the silicone. Treat this as a flower-only piece.

How To Use

1. Seat the 4" downstem in the angled joint, then seat the bowl in the downstem.
2. Fill with water until the bottom of the downstem sits roughly half an inch under the surface. On a base this wide, that's less water than it looks — start light and top up.
3. Pack the bowl, snap your lighter onto the magnetic neck band, and take your seat.
4. Light and draw. There's no carb — lift the bowl out of the downstem to clear.
5. When you're done, cap the mouthpiece and the joint with the two silicone covers and stow the tool in the neck slot.

Care & Cleaning

Softglass gives separate instructions for the two materials, and they're worth following exactly:

• Glass — a mixture of sea salt and at least 70% isopropyl alcohol, shaken and rinsed. Standard practice, and safe here: this is plain uncoated borosilicate with no decals, plating or iridescent finish to strip.
• Silicone — at least 70% isopropyl alcohol, then rinse with water and allow it to dry completely. Softglass notes that alcohol can cause the silicone to temporarily expand. That's expected and it returns to shape; don't try to force a swollen part back on while it's still wet.

Pull the silicone parts off before a long soak so they dry separately. For the downstem and the bowl's airway, pre-saturated swabs such as Dr. Dabber Iso-Snaps reach the narrow sections without a full teardown.

Do not use a torch on any part of this piece.

Known Limitations

• No torch lighters, per the manufacturer. This rules out dabbing. It's the single most important constraint on the product.
• No percolator and no ice catcher. Filtration is a single downstem into the base. It's smooth for the size, but it isn't doing anything clever.
• No carb hole — clearing is by pulling the bowl, which is normal for this style but worth knowing if you're used to a carb.
• 9" is a desk piece, not a pocket piece. The 4" foot makes it stable and hard to tip, but it isn't discreet.
• One of each colourway in stock. If a specific colour matters, it's worth not waiting.

No. The base is a rounded flask shape with a wide flat foot, not the straight-sided taper of a true beaker. It's every bit as stable — the 4" foot is wider than many beakers — but if you specifically want beaker geometry, look at the Human Grade 6" Beaker.

Can I dab with it?
No. Softglass states their products are not for use with torch-style lighters, and that rules out heating a banger on this piece. It's built for dry flower.

Will the silicone actually stop it breaking?
