How do I make sure a glass accessory fits?

Glass bowls, downstems, ash catchers, bangers and adapters connect by a ground glass joint, and two things have to match: size and gender.

1. Size: the three common joint sizes are 10mm, 14mm and 18mm. Most bongs and rigs use 14mm; larger bongs often use 18mm; small rigs often use 10mm.
2. Gender: a male piece slides inside a female joint. A female joint on your bong takes a male bowl or male banger, and the other way around.
3. Angle: ash catchers and bangers come in 45 and 90 degree versions. Match the angle of the joint so the piece sits upright.
4. Downstem length: measure from the top of the joint to where the stem should sit under the water.

If the joint on your piece does not match the accessory you want, a glass joint adapter converts size, gender or angle.

How do I care for smoking accessories?

• Glass: soak or shake with a glass cleaner, rinse with warm water, and let it dry fully before use.
• Quartz bangers: swab with a cotton swab while the banger is still warm after each dab, so residue does not bake on.
• Grinders: brush out the teeth and screen; a short time in the freezer makes sticky residue easier to remove.
• Torches: refill with quality butane and let the torch rest a few minutes after filling before lighting.
• Atomizers: follow the maker's cleaning guide; most should be cleaned with cotton swabs, not soaked.
