Live Resin Explained
Made from plants frozen the moment they are harvested, so it keeps the aroma of the living plant. Sticky, glossy and usually sold as sauce, badder or sugar.
Overview
What is Live Resin?
Live resin is a solvent-based cannabis concentrate made from plants that are frozen right after harvest instead of being dried and cured. Keeping the material frozen through extraction holds on to more of the plant's aroma compounds, called terpenes, so live resin is known for strong flavor. It usually shows up as a sticky, glossy sauce, badder or sugar, and it is handled with a dab tool and used in a dab rig, an e-rig or a concentrate pen.
The name comes from its starting material. Most concentrates begin with plants that have been dried and cured; live resin begins with plants frozen right after they are cut. It belongs to the solvent-based family and is made in a licensed lab, which is why you will see it sold as sauce, badder, sugar and diamonds.
Texture and color
What does Live Resin look like?
Where Live Resin sits on the texture scale
Live resin sits on the runny side: most batches are a wet sauce or a soft, whipped badder that needs a scoop to move.
Sauce
Runny, syrupy
A wet, glossy liquid, often with small crystals settled in it. It pours slowly and drips off a flat tool, so a scoop works best.
Badder
Whipped, creamy
Whipped until it looks like cake batter. Soft and opaque, it holds its shape on a paddle tool and is the easiest live resin to load.
Sugar
Grainy, wet
Wet and granular, like brown sugar soaked in syrup. Crumbly enough to pinch off, sticky enough to need a tool.

Process
How is Live Resin made?
Live resin skips the drying and curing step that most concentrates start with. Plants are frozen within hours of harvest and stay frozen through a closed-loop hydrocarbon extraction, which helps hold on to the aroma compounds that drying tends to lose.
After extraction the solvent is purged, often in a vacuum oven, and the extract is worked into sauce, badder or sugar. The word live describes that fresh frozen input, not the texture.
Safety note: hydrocarbon extraction uses flammable, pressurized gas and belongs in a licensed lab with closed-loop equipment. This page does not cover extraction steps, and Angies Boutique does not sell extraction equipment.

How does Live Resin compare?
Live Resin vs Cured resin
SameBoth are solvent-based and made with a hydrocarbon solvent that is purged afterward.
DifferentCured resin starts from dried plants and often becomes shatter, wax or badder. Live resin starts from fresh frozen plants.
Live Resin vs Live rosin
SameBoth start from fresh frozen plants, so both are called live.
DifferentLive rosin is solventless, made with only ice water, heat and pressure, and usually costs more and is harder to find.
Live Resin vs Rosin
SameBoth are sticky concentrates dabbed in a rig, e-rig or pen.
DifferentRosin is solventless and can be pressed from dried material. Live resin is usually runnier and stickier.
Shop the gear
What gear works best with Live Resin?
Live resin is sticky and full of aroma, so the right gear does two jobs: moves a tacky concentrate cleanly, and heats it gently enough to keep the flavor. An electric rig like the Puffco Peak Pro or Dr. Dabber Switch 2 lets you pick a lower setting instead of guessing with a torch, and a hot knife or scoop tool keeps sauce off your fingers.

Questions
Live Resin FAQ
What does "live" mean in live resin?
It means the plants were frozen right after harvest instead of being dried and cured, and they stayed frozen through extraction. That fresh frozen input is what makes it live resin, whatever its texture.
Is live resin the same as live rosin?
No. Both start from fresh frozen plants, but live resin is made with a hydrocarbon solvent that is purged afterward, while live rosin is solventless and made with only ice water, heat and pressure.
What does live resin look like?
Most live resin is a glossy, sticky concentrate between a wax and a sauce, in colors from light yellow to deep gold. It is also sold as runny sauce, whipped badder and grainy sugar.
How should live resin be stored?
Keep it in an airtight container somewhere cool and dark. Air, light and heat break down the aroma compounds and can make it dry out and harden.
What gear works best with live resin?
An electric dab rig with temperature control, or a glass rig with a quartz banger and carb cap, plus a scoop, paddle or hot knife to handle it and an airtight container to store it.
Does Angies Boutique sell live resin?
No. Angies Boutique sells the gear that goes with it, including electric dab rigs, quartz bangers, carb caps, dab tools and storage, from our Los Angeles shop open since 1990.
