Solventless concentrate

Rosin Explained

Pressed out with nothing but heat and pressure. Golden and sappy off the press, soft and creamy once it rests, and made without a single chemical solvent.

Overview

What is Rosin?

Rosin is a solventless cannabis concentrate made with only heat and pressure. Flower, kief or hash is squeezed between heated plates, and the oil that comes out is collected on parchment, with no chemical solvent involved. Fresh rosin is runny like warm oil and cools into a soft, sticky, honey-like concentrate that is usually dabbed at lower temperatures to keep its flavor.

Instead of dissolving the resin with a chemical, rosin makers press it out, so the only thing in the jar is what came out of the plant. Rosin as a concentrate took off around 2014, and today it is treated as a craft product, usually priced above solvent-based concentrates because it takes more time and labor to make.

Texture and color

What does Rosin look like?

Where Rosin sits on the texture scale

Rosin
RunnyPours like oil or syrup
SaucyWet, sticky, needs a scoop
CreamySoft and scoopable
Grainy or waxyHolds its shape
Firm or drySnaps, crumbles or sifts
RunnierFirmer

Rosin sits in the middle: fresh off the press it is runny like warm oil, and as it rests it firms up into a soft, honey-like concentrate.

Fresh press

Runny, translucent

Straight off the plates it is a glossy, see-through sap, pale blonde to amber, that can look a lot like shatter while it is still warm.

Rested

Soft, honey-like

As it cools and rests it turns softer and more opaque, with a creamy, honey-like body that is easy to scoop.

Hash rosin

Light, creamy

Pressed from hash instead of flower, it is often lighter in color and creamier. Live rosin is hash rosin made from fresh frozen plants.

Process

How is Rosin made?

Flower, kief or hashHeatPressureRosin

Rosin is pressed, not extracted. The starting material goes into a fine filter bag between heated plates; the heat thins the oil and the pressure pushes it through the filter onto parchment, while the spent plant material stays behind in the bag.

Live rosin follows the same idea, but the fresh frozen plants are first washed into ice water hash and then pressed. The name comes from the rosin violinists rub on their bows, which is also made by heating and pressing.

Safety note: rosin presses combine very hot plates with high pressure. This page does not cover pressing steps, and Angies Boutique does not sell rosin presses.

How does Rosin compare?

Rosin vs Live resin

SameBoth are sticky, flavorful concentrates dabbed in a rig, e-rig or pen.

DifferentLive resin is made with a hydrocarbon solvent from fresh frozen plants. Rosin is solventless.

Rosin vs Live rosin

SameBoth are solventless and pressed with heat and pressure.

DifferentLive rosin is pressed from ice water hash made from fresh frozen plants, so it holds more aroma and usually costs more.

Rosin vs Shatter and wax

SameAll three are concentrates handled with a dab tool.

DifferentShatter and wax are made with butane. Rosin usually costs more because pressing takes more time and labor per gram.

Questions

Rosin FAQ

Why is it called rosin?

The name comes from the rosin violinists use on their bows, which is also made by heating and pressing. The concentrate is made the same basic way, with heat and pressure.

Is rosin the same as resin?

No. Resin, including live resin, is made with a hydrocarbon solvent that is purged afterward. Rosin is solventless and made with only heat and pressure.

What is live rosin?

Live rosin is rosin pressed from ice water hash that was made from fresh frozen plants. Like live resin, the word live refers to the fresh frozen starting material.

Why does rosin cost more than other concentrates?

Pressing rosin takes more time and labor than solvent extraction, and the best rosin starts from high quality hash, so it is usually priced as a craft product.

What gear works best with rosin?

Rosin suits gentle, controllable heat: an electric dab rig or portable concentrate vaporizer, or a glass rig with a quartz banger, carb cap and terp pearls, plus a scoop or paddle dab tool.

Does Angies Boutique sell rosin?

No. Angies Boutique sells the gear for it, including e-rigs like the Puffco Pivot and Dr. Dabber Switch 2, quartz bangers, carb caps, terp pearls and dab tools, from our Los Angeles shop open since 1990.
