Kief and Dry Sift Explained
The fine, powdery resin glands that fall off the plant and collect in the bottom of your grinder. The simplest concentrate there is.
Overview
What is Kief?
Kief is a solventless cannabis concentrate made of the loose resin glands, called trichomes, that fall off the plant. It collects naturally in the bottom chamber of a three or four piece grinder, where a fine screen lets it sift through. Dry sift is kief collected on purpose by shaking material over fine screens. Kief is a light green to golden powder that is sprinkled on a bowl or pressed into hash.
Kief is the most basic concentrate: no solvent, no water, no heat, just the resin glands separated from the plant. Many people already have some without knowing it, sitting in the kief catcher of their grinder. Dry sift is the cleaner, deliberate version, sifted through stacked screens to separate the resin heads from plant matter.
Texture and color
What does Kief look like?
Where Kief sits on the texture scale
Kief sits at the very firm, dry end of the scale: a loose powder with no stickiness at all.
Grinder kief
Green, dusty
What collects in a grinder's kief catcher. A greener powder with some plant matter.
Dry sift
Gold, sandy
Sifted through fine screens on purpose, it is lighter and cleaner, often golden.
Pressed kief
Firm puck
Kief pressed into a small puck or coin, which turns it into a simple hash.

Process
How is Kief made?
Kief separates on its own. When dried flower is ground or handled, the brittle resin glands break off, and a fine screen lets them fall through while the plant material stays above. A three or four piece grinder does exactly this in its bottom chamber.
Dry sift is the same idea done deliberately: dried material is gently worked over a series of fine screens to collect cleaner resin. No solvent, water or heat is involved.

How does Kief compare?
Kief vs Bubble hash
SameBoth are collected resin glands with no solvent.
DifferentKief is sifted dry. Bubble hash is washed out with ice water, which usually makes it cleaner.
Kief vs Rosin
SameKief can be pressed into rosin.
DifferentKief is loose, dry powder. Rosin is the oil pressed out of it with heat.
Kief vs Crumble
SameBoth can be sprinkled on a bowl.
DifferentCrumble is a solvent-based extract. Kief is loose resin with no solvent.
Shop the gear
What gear works best with Kief?
Kief starts with the right grinder. A three or four piece grinder with a fine screen, like a Santa Cruz Shredder, collects kief in its bottom chamber as you grind. From there, kief is usually sprinkled on a bowl in a hand pipe or bong, or added to a dry herb vaporizer.

Questions
Kief FAQ
What is kief?
Kief is the loose, powdery resin glands, called trichomes, that fall off dried cannabis flower. It collects in the bottom chamber of three and four piece grinders.
What is the difference between kief and dry sift?
They are the same material. Kief usually means what collects naturally in a grinder, while dry sift is collected on purpose over fine screens and is usually cleaner.
How do I collect kief?
Use a three or four piece grinder with a fine screen. As you grind, kief falls through the screen into the bottom chamber, where you can scrape it out.
What is the difference between kief and hash?
Kief is loose powder. Hash is kief or resin that has been pressed together, or washed with ice water in the case of bubble hash.
What gear works best with kief?
A three or four piece grinder with a kief catcher, a hand pipe, bong or dry herb vaporizer to use it in, and an airtight jar to store it.
Does Angies Boutique sell kief?
No. Angies Boutique sells the gear for it, including Santa Cruz Shredder and other grinders with kief catchers, hand pipes, bongs, dry herb vaporizers and storage, from our Los Angeles shop open since 1990.
