Solvent-based concentrate

Shatter Explained

Thin, glassy and amber, shatter snaps like hard candy when it is cold and turns soft and taffy-like when it warms up.

Overview

What is Shatter?

Shatter is a solvent-based cannabis concentrate with a hard, glassy, see-through texture. It is made in a licensed lab by extracting the resin with a hydrocarbon solvent, purging the solvent and letting the extract set into a thin, smooth sheet without being stirred. Shatter is amber to gold, snaps into pieces when it is cool, and is dabbed in a rig, e-rig or concentrate pen.

Shatter gets its name from the way it breaks. Because the extract is left still while it sets, it cools into a clear, glass-like slab instead of the opaque, creamy textures you get when an extract is whipped or stirred. It is one of the oldest and most recognizable concentrate styles, and it is still one of the cleanest to handle since it does not stick to your fingers when it is cool.

Texture and color

What does Shatter look like?

Where Shatter sits on the texture scale

Shatter
RunnyPours like oil or syrup
SaucyWet, sticky, needs a scoop
CreamySoft and scoopable
Grainy or waxyHolds its shape
Firm or drySnaps, crumbles or sifts
RunnierFirmer

Shatter sits at the firm end: cool shatter snaps clean, and only turns soft and pully when it warms up in your hand.

Glass

Clear, brittle

The classic style. A thin, see-through amber sheet that snaps cleanly into small pieces, like hard candy.

Pull and snap

Taffy-like

A softer shatter that bends and stretches a little before it breaks, usually because it is warmer or holds more terpenes.

Sappy

Soft, sticky

Shatter that has warmed or aged can soften toward a sap. Keeping it cool brings back the snap.

Process

How is Shatter made?

Dried plantsHydrocarbon extractionPurgeSet flat, unstirred

Shatter starts like most solvent-based concentrates: dried plant material goes through a closed-loop hydrocarbon extraction in a licensed lab, and the solvent is then purged from the extract.

What makes it shatter is what happens next. The extract is spread thin and left undisturbed while it sets, so its molecules stay in a smooth, glass-like arrangement. Stirring or whipping the same extract would turn it into wax, budder or badder instead.

Safety note: hydrocarbon extraction uses flammable, pressurized gas and belongs in a licensed lab with closed-loop equipment. This page does not cover extraction steps, and Angies Boutique does not sell extraction equipment.

How does Shatter compare?

Shatter vs Wax

SameBoth are solvent-based and made the same way up to the final step.

DifferentWax is stirred or whipped as it sets, so it turns opaque and soft. Shatter is left still, so it stays glassy.

Shatter vs Budder

SameBoth are solvent-based concentrates dabbed in a rig, e-rig or pen.

DifferentBudder is whipped into a creamy, butter-like texture. Shatter is hard and brittle.

Shatter vs Rosin

SameFresh rosin can look glassy and amber like shatter.

DifferentRosin is solventless, made with only heat and pressure, and usually softens into a creamy texture.

Questions

Shatter FAQ

Why is it called shatter?

Because of how it breaks. Cool shatter is hard and glassy, and it snaps or shatters into pieces when you bend it, like hard candy.

What is the difference between shatter and wax?

They are made the same way until the end. Shatter is left still while it sets, so it stays glassy. Wax is stirred or whipped, so it turns opaque and soft.

Why does shatter turn soft or sappy?

Warmth is the usual reason. Shatter softens when it heats up in your hand or in a warm room, and some batches are naturally softer. Keeping it cool helps it hold its snap.

How should shatter be stored?

In an airtight container somewhere cool and dark. Many people keep it between parchment paper so it does not stick to the container.

What gear works best with shatter?

A glass dab rig with a quartz banger, carb cap and torch, or an electric dab rig, plus a flat paddle dab tool to pick up pieces.

Does Angies Boutique sell shatter?

No. Angies Boutique sells the gear for it, including glass dab rigs, e-rigs like the Dr. Dabber Switch 2, quartz bangers, torches and dab tools, from our Los Angeles shop open since 1990.
