Glass gives the cleanest flavor and the widest range of styles and art, and it is easy to see when it needs cleaning, but it can break if dropped. The carb hole controls airflow. Cover it with a finger while you light the bowl and inhale to build the hit, then uncover it to pull the remaining smoke out of the chamber. Without a carb, smoke lingers in the pipe; with one, you clear it in a single pull.

A spoon is a straight pipe with the bowl on top and a side carb. A sherlock has a curved neck that hangs the bowl below the mouthpiece, so it rests in the hand and hits gently. A steamroller is a straight tube with an open carb at the far end, so it fills fast and hits hard.

For a first pipe or daily use, a 4 inch spoon like the GRAV Classic Spoon is the easiest size to pack and clean. Smaller pipes are more pocketable but hit hotter, while longer pipes give the smoke more time to cool. For single hits on the go, choose a one-hitter.

Put the pipe in a zip bag or jar with 91 percent or higher isopropyl alcohol and a spoon of coarse salt, shake for a minute, let it soak if the resin is heavy, then rinse with warm water, never boiling. Glass cleaners like Formula 420 work faster. Use a gentle cleaner on sculpted, fumed or color-changing glass.

Clean it often, before the resin hardens: a short soak every few sessions is easier than scraping old buildup. Use a grinder so the bowl packs evenly and burns cleanly, and avoid packing the bowl too tightly. Thicker glass and longer pipes also stay cleaner than very small pipes.
